ABSTRACT

In this chapter, an overview of major human body systems is provided. The cellular and molecular basis of human biology was introduced to the readers. Since a single chapter cannot delineate this subject matter in great details, the goal of this chapter is a general introduction, with emphasis on the interconnectivity of different body systems in human biology, so the students will come away with a view of human body as a harmonized and integrated single system, thus paving the way for the introduction of the subsequent chapter on Systems Biology. After a short description of each of the body systems, this chapter then discusses some of the major elements of cellular biology and their functions, including organelles, cell membranes, stationary cells, immune cells, enzymes, cytokines, and antibodies. This chapter then discussed some of the major elements of molecular biology and their functions, including genome and proteome, as well as some common molecular biology techniques such as polymerase chain reaction and microarray.
