ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the general ethical consideration for a proposed engineering-medicine curriculum for the purpose of transforming medical education. First this chapter addresses the concern of whether a new curriculum like engineering-medicine would short-change medical students’ acquisition of essential medical knowledges and skills. Next this chapter discusses the ethical consideration of patient privacy protection in relationship to the engineering-medicine curriculum. Then this chapter considers the ethical concern of compromising quality and safety when the objective is to improve healthcare delivery efficiency. Furthermore, this chapter deals with the ethical consideration when technology utilization is increased in relationship to engineering-medicine. Some specific recommendations to strengthen the general ethics in engineering-medicine curriculum were proposed, including cultivating a physician-patient relationship culture, a human dignity respecting culture, a patient safety culture, and a cost-conscious culture. Finally, the ethical consideration in relationship to artificial intelligence is discussed.
