ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses one of the key engineering principles, the ability to solve real-world problem. This chapter first focuses on defining the engineering principles and methodology of problem-solving, a cornerstone ability for all engineers. The principles of engineering problem-solving method in medicine was discussed, including a traditional engineering method, a problem-solving cycle, and a problem-solving matrix. Furthermore, the application of this engineering principle in medicine was illustrated with an exercise using a common medical example. Utilization of engineering problem-solving techniques in real-life medical problems is feasible, practical, and useful, provided that the provision of “Do No Harm” is kept in the consideration for each step of the problem-solving process.
