ABSTRACT

The information which is to featured on the map is collected by the children on short 'observation' and 'recording' walks. The older and more sophisticated the children are, the more complex the classification can be. For example, shops could be classified by the services which they offer to the public as well as by the products they sell, and factories and workshops could be grouped according to the industry of which they are a part. Children's direct observations can be supplemented with material extracted from Yellow Pages, local directories, and advertisement pages in local newspapers. A treadmill in working order, once used for raising water, may be seen at Carisbrooke Castle. Children who live in mining areas will find plentiful evidence of the old engine sheds, and though many are rather gaunt and forbidding, they are well worth exploring by a small group.
