ABSTRACT

Trinity House was founded by Henry VIII in 1514; it was a guild of shipmen and mariners, whose task was to help reduce the loss of ships along the English coastline. Ports like Ipswich, Great Yarmouth, Lydd, Romney, and Dunwich expanded in response to an ever growing woollen industry and slowly died as steel, coal, and cotton ushered in a revolution in the economy. Ports are interesting places for children to visit, but it is vital to make arrangements well in advance. Lighthouses slowly replaced the fire beacons, although one lighthouse dates from Roman times-reminding people that they were known to the Ancient World. Lighthouses built on land welcome visitors during daylight hours. The Lifeboat service is run by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which was founded by Sir William Hillary, T. Wilson and G. Hibbert in 1824.
