ABSTRACT

Trips to markets and to country snows provide a worthwhile supplement to farm visits. A visit to a farm can be an invaluable experience to children who are growing up in an urban environment. As the drift from countryside to town has accelerated agriculture has become an even more capital-intensive industry. The farm may consist of a single range of buildings - a house, a barn, and a byre - or be made up of a number of units grouped around the house and the farmyard. Some buildings are specific to the rural setting, others are to be found wherever people settle. Rural crafts people may not be as easily found as they once were, but there remains in most communities a richness of experience that is rarely tapped by teachers. Many teachers use children's innate interest in animals as a peg on which to hang farm studies.
