ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an introduction that summarizes the distinctive features of community service program at Jetty with particular emphasis on the program's prospects for institutionalization. It considers the program's development and implementation. The chapter explains the program's operation. The program coordinator's background and, more specifically, his interest in community service are considered. Student views of their school's community service program are summarized. The chapter deals explicitly with the program's importance and its prospects for survival, for institutionalization. When asked why their school supported community service, some students believed that Jetty wanted service for mostly reasons of public relations. Jetty faculty involved with the program are less critical of the program than the director. The "Philosophy of Jetty School" says, in part: Jetty is dedicated to academic excellence founded upon mastery of basic learning skills and to the development of self-confident individuals prepared for the responsibilities inherent in personal freedom.
