ABSTRACT

NOTE: Makula is derived from the verb kukura– to grow. This word gives an indication of the underlying reasons for the payment of the brideprice. Brideprice is distributed among both the fathers and the mother’s relatives. The neglect of this distribution is supposed to evoke the anger of the spirits of the family, who would punish the new couple with sterility: the brideprice is therefore given to ensure considerable offspring i.e. growth of the family.
