ABSTRACT

Rereading the classic essay from afar, we see that “Politics and the English Language” barely coheres. Rereading it more closely part-by-part discloses exactly how the often ballyhooed virtues of the essay have long outshone and thus obscured the essay’s far more genuine assets. The attitudes and aptitudes that Orwell exhibited, once separated from his enjoyable but diverting jibes and snark, can improve the habits of readers and writers alike.
