ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on furthering transformation through the university’s role of teaching and learning in South Africa. It argues that a sound incorporation of ontology and epistemology in higher education (HE) teaching and learning is needed, which means preparing students to use their history and context to reflect on their situatedness, and critique it for the betterment of society. While transformation in HE institutions in South Africa has been understood differently by different groups, the common understanding is one that stems from the need to redress past inequalities created by the apartheid regime. A socially cohesive and inclusive institutional culture is underscored in the transformation charter that notes that every member of the university community has a responsibility to promote social interaction at the institution. The transformation charter gives direction to transformation that goes beyond the conceptualization of race and gender.
