ABSTRACT

This chapter is a question and answer style article that contains past FRCA paper examples related to neurosurgery, neuroradiology and neurocritical care. It also guides trainees on the most effective manner in which to approach these questions. The discussion covers the following: nerves supply sensation to the nasal air passages (10%), the oropharynx (10%) and the larynx (10%); the techniques for achieving local anaesthesia of these areas (15%); the indications (15%) and contraindications (15%) for awake fibreoptic intubation; and the complications of awake fibreoptic intubation.
