ABSTRACT

This chapter offers guidance on how to tackle the emergency stations successfully and provides suggested summaries for revising. This is because in obstetrics, gynaecologists are generally dealing with young, otherwise healthy women and their babies. The Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Part 3 allows examiners to evaluate the ability of candidates to think clearly and act appropriately in the acute situation where the life of the mother or baby may be at stake. Examiners will quickly spot the candidate who appears to be 'reciting from the textbook of obstetric emergencies' rather than relying on past clinical experience when describing their approach. Medical emergencies can be stressful at the best of times, but this is particularly true in the field of obstetrics where most acute, life-threatening events tend to occur. The effective management of medical emergencies requires a multidisciplinary team approach.
