ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some new analysis of unit record data from Dataset A of the 2012–2016 American Community Surveys. It discusses the potential sources of intergenerational education transmission, using primarily a Human Capital Model, but also building on insights from a range of disciplines. The chapter then looks at the data and methodology used for the particular aspect of the analysis. It explores the role of parental education in explaining early childhood outcomes among Indigenous children. The chapter uses data from the 2012 Programme of International Student Assessments to explore the relationship between Indigenous status, parental education and a set of intermediate school outcomes. It also explores the relationship between parental education and what I label Year 12 persistence. However, based on the observational data investments in human capital will likely reduce differences in economic development between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations of the US, but differences will still remain.
