ABSTRACT

The ongoing pilot study outlined in this chapter aims to create new musical instruments with and for young people on the autistic spectrum that encourage exploratory sonic play. Through reflection of the authors practice in inclusive theater and experimental music, and collaboration with a special school, prototype instruments were developed that can support both congruent and semi-incongruent interaction styles. The early responses of seven non-verbal young people on the autistic spectrum to the instruments during the first phase of testing and future developments for the project are discussed.
