ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the features common to all adolescents seeking health care. Adolescent migrants are vulnerable to human rights violations. The tenets of adolescent medicine extend to health care delivery for all young people, including migrant youth in their various contexts. Youth-friendly services are central to the provision and utilization of quality health care for adolescents and young adults. Migrant adolescents are exposed to stressors during all stages of the migration journey and are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues, including anxiety and adjustment disorders. Adolescents have among the highest rates of unmet need for sexual and reproductive health services. Many adolescents migrate explicitly for labour, and working youth migrants are particularly vulnerable to occupational hazards and exploitation. A strengths-based approach is widely accepted in the field of adolescent medicine as a best practice for engaging adolescents in care.
