ABSTRACT
This chapter investigates the notion of a role, in order to establish what kind(s) of reasons roles generate; considers Marx—s contrast between authenticity and alienation, and Bernard Williams— between internal and external reasons; and concludes by arguing that Marx—s notion of an authentic reason is a deeper and more fruitful notion than Williams— notion of an internal reason—which latter notion anyway faces counter-examples.
