ABSTRACT

This chapter starts by recounting the global prevalence of obesity and its link to anxiety, depression, and cancer, and the need to motivate patients to make constructive lifestyle modifications. Psychosocial treatments can enhance or substitute for pharmacological therapy. Adding mindfulness practices to cognitive behavioral techniques enhances the beneficial effects of these treatment modalities. A website for obtaining free, downloadable materials is cited. Practitioners are encouraged to find positive ways to reframe the challenges that today’s medical care systems present. Supporting patients and encouraging them to express their feelings will enhance their power to heal. It may also foster more positive relationships in the greater community.
