ABSTRACT

Experiencing conflict is a universal aspect of being human. People disagree about policies in their workplaces, laws put in place by their governments, and rules at their schools. People also disagree with each other. Some couples get along well day to day, while others seem like they argue about everything, from who should clean the toothpaste splatters off the bathroom mirror to who ate the last slice of cold pizza. According to research on marital conflicts, among couples with children, children are at the root of many disagreements, but all couples also commonly have conflicts over chores, communication, leisure time, work, money, personal habits, and other family members. Frequent sources of conflict among our couples were similar to those observed in research on marriage: children, chores, communication, sex and fidelity, leisure time, work, money, addiction, personal habits, and other family members.
