ABSTRACT

One of the outcomes of globalization is the creation of a new kind of "government". This parallel world is ruled to a considerable extent by individuals of wealth, power and influence, who operate empires derived from the increasing use of high-end technology. These demand the employment, and proximity, of a new class of workers – specialists in information technology (IT) and AI. The complexity of modern globalized living has gone beyond the capacity of most people to comprehend it, and in 2016, with Brexit and the election of Trump, people see clear signs of backlash. The invisibility of the dark matter of globalization poses serious challenges to many people who have not been able to identify with the app universe. Some of the rejections of globalization go back into the mid-twentieth century, early indications that the increasing complexity of the world was proving, for some, to be too great a challenge.
