ABSTRACT

Kinematic mapping solutions implemented by means of mobile laser scanning (MLS) provide the best accurate and timely structural information of our environment. This chapter discusses a multiplatform approach to the application of MLS in various surveying tasks to fill the requests for 3D data for terrain modeling, industrial scenes, construction sites, and infrastructure as well as urban mapping. Many of the applications involve civil engineering in urban areas and urban planning, which serve to make 3D city modeling, BIM creation (building information model), and related modeling probably the fastest-growing market in this field.

This presentation outlines the idea of multiplatform mobile laser scanning and solutions such as vehicle-, trolley-, and ATV-operated data acquisition, and boat-mounted equipment. With state-of-the-art sensors, the composed point clouds capture object details with good coverage and precision. Aspects of backpack MLS for surveying applications, as-built data collection, and use for natural sciences where the requirements include mobility, accessibility, and precision in variable terrain and climate conditions are presented. In addition to presenting technical description of the systems, we discuss the performance of the solutions in applications in urban mapping, forestry, as-built data, public works, and terrain modeling. Performance of the MLS is reported based on results of evaluations stemming from multiple case studies on a permanent MLS test field and in situ.
