ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the concept of culture and to explore different ways of looking at culture and how culture affects organizational behavior. Specifically, the chapter will:

Provide a model of the relationship between national and societal variables, cultural values and behaviors, and organizational effectiveness to guide the discussion in the chapter;

Provide a definition of culture and explain the components of the definition;

Discuss aspects of cultural values and differentiate among values, needs, attitudes, and norms;

Explain several models of cultural values with an emphasis on using these models in international management, decision making, and organizational behavior;

Consider how culture affects our view of others from different cultures who behave differently;

Discuss variations within cultures, including sub cultures, and overlapping cultures.
