ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to consider the important role of language for international managers, and to give an appreciation of different religions and the impact of religion on behavior. Specifically, the chapter will:

Define what is meant by language and give examples on how language differences affect behavior and management, as well as examples of the relationship of language to religion;

Look at language diversity in terms of countries that speak one or many languages, and consider how the multi-lingual nature of international organizations affects behavior;

Explore how international managers can function with many languages and ensure that people perform effectively in this complex environment;

Consider the importance of religion to people and the role of religion in an organizational setting;

Give a brief overview of the major religions of the world and suggest how international managers can manage the differences in behavior due to religion.
