ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the empirical investigation of China’s evolving innovation system with a review of China’s innovation policies after the inauguration of the 2006 national innovation agenda. It examines China’s innovation development from an evolutionary perspective. The book also examines the obstacles that block innovation or cause innovation failures. It focuses on Chinese firms operating under non-optimal conditions and with deficient resources, but attaining significant business success. The book also explores the links between architectural innovation, institutional and organizational setup, and domestic corporate performance in the relevant industries. It considers conditions required for sustainable systemic innovation proper, in an understanding of individuals’ problem-solving future-oriented behavior. The book also considers the distinctive features of China’s pattern of architectural innovation, showing how the prevalent domestic conditions enable firms to source product components and mix and match them in unparalleled ways.
