ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the “opportunity window” in China through the analysis of the innovative features in the digital age based on the theoretical framework. It illustrates the comprehensive competitive advantage to achieve technological catch-up in China compared with other countries and explains why digitalization may provide Chinese firms with a window of opportunity. Technological catch-up means that developing countries or regions gradually eliminate technological gaps with developed countries through their own efforts in the process of technological development, transcending developed countries. Technological catch-up in developing countries is neither self-development linked with backwardness nor a convergence induced by market forces in a free economy, but a manifestation and result of the political will of the state. The development of an e-commerce platform has become the bright spot and the most dynamic field of China’s new economic development. Developed countries were responsible for design, development, and marketing while the developing countries engaged in production or assembly.
