ABSTRACT
This chapter defines implicit bias as it relates to schools and presents a brief history of relevant research and legislation. A discussion of the goals of the educational system and risks to students when implicit bias is not addressed precedes a historical discussion of bias. Research – both formal and informal – intersects with legislation to provide a system for equity in education, although such goals remain out of reach. This discussion sets up an introduction to the flow of book contents to follow.
