ABSTRACT

In this first invited chapter, the focus is on the Transforming School Discipline Collaborative (TSDC) and their work following the School Discipline Reform Law in Illinois. Through a Model Student Code of Conduct, Discipline Checklist, administrator toolkits, and Administrator Academies, TSDC sought to support a statewide reduction in suspensions and expulsions. The items created and training tools offered are discussed in detail with a focus on how they aim to reduce the impact of implicit bias in the school discipline decision-making process. Lessons learned and initial outcomes offer key insights on how policy and practice reform can be structured for success.
