ABSTRACT

In this chapter I explore the leadership concept and discuss leadership as a socially constructed phenomenon. Early leadership concepts (lead, distribute, and control) are contrasted with what can be called postmodern leadership concepts (consultative and motivating functions). It is argued that in order to maintain an understanding of leadership in organizations, we must reintroduce some of the old leadership virtues while simultaneously discussing leadership in the relational coaching terms of newer literature. Leadership needs to include both aspects of setting limits and providing motivation.
