ABSTRACT

Our identities as people are linked to our research. The chapter explores the matter of ‘insider’ and ‘outsider’. It is concluded that in our globalised world the boundaries between these two labels are not rigidly clear but more as a continuum. This then helps to clarify my own identity as a researcher. In the context of this study the subject of cultural competence of researcher is explored. Here I share the preparation I undertook during the conduct of the research issues I encountered. After a general description of Birmingham as a local authority, details are provided on the three schools as sites for the research. There is an outline of the research methodology, making sense of the data gathered.
