ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the authors provide an analysis of the governance issues that have affected the sector. The authors stress the importance of governance and consider the changing regulatory landscape. They draw out lessons for trustees, and identify what steps need to be taken to address the problems that have come to light. The authors consider the future of governance and outline the characteristics of good governance. They conclude that a culture of good governance is essential. They argue that this is one that goes beyond regulatory requirements and a rules-based approach; it is informed by values and ethics. The case for good governance in non-profits led by committed and engaged trustees with an understanding of their role, appropriate skills and ability to lead, has never been clearer. It is also because of the public's changing expectations of non-profits, their values, and how they operate in accordance with these values.
