ABSTRACT

In the sense economic imperialism has affected the European State: it has added to or dimmed its glory, greatness, and prestige. In the realm of States and the policies of States men must face the fact that they can have economic imperialism and war, or, if they do not want war, they must have a League of Nations and no economic imperialism. If economic imperialism can anywhere promote the economic interests of the citizens of the predatory European State, its effects should be observable in Algeria; for nowhere has the policy and its corollaries been applied more ruthlessly. The prophecies of the economic imperialist with regard to the East Coast of Africa have proved completely false. British possessions there are of negligible importance to British industry, whether as sources of supply for raw material or as markets for manufactures. It is unnecessary to discuss at length the effects of German economic imperialism upon the economic interests of the German people.
