ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to trace the general effects of European policy in Africa. The dogma of economic imperialism prevailed with the aid of modern rifle and gun. The slaughter of the most warlike Africans encouraged the survivors to submit, and peace descended upon the greater part of Africa. Economic imperialism will never disappear out of the world unless the beliefs and desires of economic imperialism change to other ideals. Economic imperialism can only be destroyed by a social revolution, a revolution in men's beliefs and desires; but the revolution itself requires for its success the acceptance of the ideal and the system of international trusteeship. The belief that the economic development of the country should be the first duty of the administration in order that it may fit into and serve the economic—the industrial and financial—system of Europe will be the main principle of government.
