ABSTRACT

Umbundu education should be organized around those experiences which are central to Umbundu life. 'Systematic utilization of the scientific method' requires that the education of the Ovimbundu be organized around their own social experience. Only on that basis can a generalization of the scientific method be expected. African adults want education. When they think that it will mean advancement or advantage for themselves, they are eager to secure it. Examples of successful community movements which might be of value for the Umbundu village may be had from several parts of the world to-day. The Umbundu conception of education as integration of the individual in the ongoing processes of society and the congeniality of such a conception to progressive character education have been noted. The broader communal aspects of education considered remind us that education also has a function in transforming society. These two functions of education are not antagonistic but complementary.
