ABSTRACT

A childish story is told of a certain Mohammedan teacher who had determined to make a journey. He carried with him for food one fried cake of millet flour. The childish character of so many of the stories told by these natives is nowhere so prominent as among the vast series of tales which are told presumably by way of education to the young. The snake, the leopard, and the lion used formerly to live in the same compound. They were the greatest of friends. Each of the two animals would take turn and turn about to provide meat, and the snake for his part would procure them firewood. Once upon a time an old man lived alone with his wife, and they were so old that it was no longer possible for them to do the necessary work to live. So they sent for their nephew, who came and worked for them.
