ABSTRACT

Given all the attention to technology disruption these days, what are the likely sources of productivity-enhancing technological advance, and how will these be reflected in new industries or in transforming existing ones? In what ways might these advances impact output and value creation leading to higher productivity? What might be some of the downsides and trade-offs to consider? Productivity growth seems to be equated with creating new forms of competitive advantage in advanced industries, and though this is true to a great extent, whole industries remain in today’s advanced economies that have unrealized opportunities to achieve growth through the adoption of new technologies and the digitization of many business processes, which could have a dramatic impact on aggregate productivity growth. This addresses industrial activity and its implications for productivity growth from the perspective of advanced innovation-driven industries but also with regard to wider segments of today’s economies.
