ABSTRACT

This chapter helps to understand a key component of effective teaching: the connection between instructional procedures and student behavior. It considers how these concepts are related and then reflects on why this connection is important to the development of new English teachers. The chapter describes the three components of an effective lesson and identified as important to strong classroom management: clear organization, a strong sense of pace, and a thorough lesson plan. Clear organization, a strong sense of pace, and a thorough lesson plan are important components of effective instruction and strong classroom management: instruction that incorporates these features increases the likelihood that students will remain focused and on-task. To best understand and make use of the connection between instructional procedures and student behavior, the chapter recommends that teachers prioritize student work time and use movement as a classroom management tool.
