ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the story of refugee Nurain from Sri Lanka, based on interviews, within the context of the individual's background and nation of origin. She shows how the refugee faces the situation in accessing education globally. Nurain's father had been an affluent businessman in Sri Lanka, whose main dealings were in the northern part of the country. This was an area where he had family connections but had also been the stronghold of the rebel Tamil Tigers during the Sri Lankan Civil War. With the war ending and the Tamil Tigers defeated, his northern connections rendered him suspect. In reality, they found themselves struggling to make ends meet: It is only after we came to Malaysia that he had to find a way of living. Unfortunately, in 2009, only one refugee learning centre in Malaysia offered any kind of secondary education, and the highest class was Form 4 (15 years olds).
