ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the story of refugee Jamilah from Iraq, based on interviews, within the context of the individual's background and nation of origin. She shows how the refugee faces the situation in accessing education globally. Omar first arrived in Malaysia six years ago at the age of 19. He had been registered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) as a refugee even since he first arrived in Syria 11 years ago. However, in all this time, the UNHCR has neither resettled nor rejected him. Meanwhile, living in a Malaysia as a refugee means living without legal recognition, and facing endless restrictions; he feels that he cannot make plans or take control of his own life. He described being stopped by the police and having to pay a bribe because he does not have a visa, only a UNHCR card.
