ABSTRACT

Amelia Opie, Adelaide (ed. David Chandler, Kyoto University)

Amelia Alderson, later Opie, was an important radical writer in the 1790s and a member of the Godwin-Holcroft circle. She wrote several plays, now lost, but a full synopsis of Adelinda was published after the plays private performance in 1791. This synopsis demonstrates that Adelinda, a play well-known to Godwin and Holcroft, was probably the first English drama to reflect the direct influence of Schiller’s sensational European landmark, The Robbers (1781).
