ABSTRACT

The Global Justice Movement (GJM) crucially shaped political mobilization and contention in Europe. The chapter elaborates the central characteristics of this influential movement and discusses its impact on society and politics as well as on social movement studies. It provides an overview of the movement’s emergence and development in Europe and outlines its central goals, protest events and actors. Next to highlighting similarities across Europe, the chapter also outlines differences between countries and regions concerning the scope and focus of mobilizations. Furthermore, the chapter demonstrates the considerable influence the GJM had on subsequent movements and in particular on anti-austerity protests in Europe, for example with regard to goals and practices of decision-making, and explores how this has affected social movement research more generally.
