ABSTRACT

The convergence of media and information sources flowing through social media now permeates the daily lives of people. On one hand, social media has allowed people with common relations and interests to communicate and collaborate. On the other hand, social media technology has enabled individuals and groups to tailor and restrict the content to which they are exposed, regardless if it originated on television, in print sources, or from the White House, the pulpit, or hate groups. To analyze the potential impact of propaganda, it is important to have an understanding of how people use their time in their daily lives and the time they spend exposed to social media. It is also important to have a common definition of who produces propaganda and who consumes propaganda. This also requires an understanding of how the propaganda process interacts with or results in outcomes such as intolerance, extremism, and radicalization. This chapter discusses social media propaganda creation, delivery, and consumption as well as the results of propaganda.
