ABSTRACT

The previous chapters have discussed land degradation that leads to increased sediment watershed yield which then feeds into reservoir and causes sedimentation. The rate of sedimentation impacts reservoir storage and design life and in turn the sustainability of freshwater resources needed for meeting reservoir design objectives. Reservoir sedimentation thus plays a fundamental role in developing measures for sediment management and in turn for developing approaches for sustainable water resources management and infrastructure development. These measures and approaches must take into consideration climate change and changes in the environment and ecosystem which are likely to accelerate in the decades ahead. This chapter provides a snapshot of these issues.
