ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book facilitates a fuller understanding of the issues surrounding the development of education for economic and industrial understanding (EIU) and of its place and purpose in the curriculum. It encourages more people to take an active and informed part in this ongoing dialogue. The book provides insights and support for all those involved in developing EIU in schools. It explores the different processes and modes of developing EIU across the curriculum — the contexts, experiences and types of teaching, learning and assessment. The book details the contribution of other subjects and elements which are outside the National Curriculum but are a crucial part of the whole curriculum. It discusses some of the issues involved in such partnerships and provides some examples of good practice.
