ABSTRACT

This chapter intends to make explicit some of the links between economic and industrial understanding (EIU) and Physical Education (PE) in the National Curriculum. In order to end the isolation of PE as a subject with cross-curricular responsibility, teachers need help to recognise the potential for their current practice to contribute to whole-school issues. This chapter provides some thoughts concerning a definition of what is economic awareness in history and a procedure for developing economic awareness in history. All aspects of geography provide opportunities for contributing to EIU. Despite technical and vocational education initiative (TVEI) courses and post-16 vocational programmes that combine language learning with the development of economic skills uncertainties still surround the integration of EIU into languages courses. There is a particularly close link between design and technology and EIU as both aim to help pupils to develop an interest and awareness in economic and industrial affairs.
