ABSTRACT

Within recent years there has been an increasing global concern with school bullying and violence. In Australia, the issue of school bullying has been the focus of research and policy development for over 25 years. There is no doubt that school bullying is an all too prevalent feature of society that needs to be seriously addressed. Views on the issue range from rather idealistic, overly optimistic claims to “bullyproof” schools and students, to the idea that the problematizing and sensationalizing of child/youth violence is simply a symptom of a “ephebiphobia”, or fear and loathing of young people. In this chapter a school and classroom intervention to address school bullying developed in Australia and implemented in several other countries will be described and illustrated with a case study of a school.
