ABSTRACT

Burnout in the workplace is often the result of a mismatch between the person and the work environment. However, according to Maslach, there are three specific sources that influence the development of burnout. The first source involves the dynamics of the interactions one has with a variety of individuals in the school setting. The second source of burnout is situated within the work environment that those interactions take place. Last, it is important to explore the individual characteristics that may influence one’s likelihood of developing burnout. C. Maslach and S. E. Jackson identified the three dimensions of burnout as being: an overwhelming exhaustion; feelings of cynicism and detachment from the job and; a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. When an individual suffers from burnout, extreme emotional and physical exhaustion is experienced. Exhaustion is often the first sign that the stressors of one’s job have become too demanding.
