ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the reader to a holistic formulation of R/S issues in counseling that uses the Ways Paradigm. First, in an effort to set the stage for the unique contributions of the current model, some of the challenges that beset assessment are reviewed. The ways that existing assessment models address these challenges through stages of tacit, initial, implicit, and explicit assessment is discussed. Next, the Ways Paradigm is applied to assess common R/S constructs and tease out their cognitive (understanding), affective (being), and behavioral (intervening) aspects, leading to a case conceptualization tool that considers a client’s resources and challenges. Finally, this tool is applied to a variety of case examples to demonstrate how to use it to guide practice.
