ABSTRACT

This chapter examines fundamental considerations of how R/S is an aspect of multicultural competence in clinical work and how its ultimacy and transcendence of everyday categories makes it different from other cultural considerations. Using frameworks from the multicultural counseling literature, this chapter first explores how theories of identity development can be applied to R/S and then examines issues of R/S privilege and stigma. Multicultural competency lists are explored through the lens of R/S application. Finally, the chapter describes interculturalism as the next step beyond multiculturalism. An example from group psychotherapy illustrates these findings.
