ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the issues facing volunteer policing today, and raises questions about how these matters will impact the role of special constables, auxiliaries, and reserves in the future. The concept of local control, particularly in the United States, the benefits of a national model, and the potential impact of accreditation for volunteer policing are discussed. The recruitment, selection, and training of volunteer police, including the benefits of drawing from former full-time police officers for volunteer work, are explored. Additional issues facing volunteer police, including stipends or allowances, off-duty police work, the anti-police rhetoric in the United States, and technology needs for volunteer police service, are also developed.
