ABSTRACT

The Ashanti Confederacy Council as restored by Government in 1935 is governed by legislation defining the area of its authority, and setting out its powers and constitution. The scope of the Council's activities was widened by the Native Law and Custom Ordinance 1940. The Confederacy Council was at the request of the chiefs themselves that Government conceded that constitutional cases should be tried by the Confederacy Council. A survey of the topics that the Confederacy Council has discussed at the several sessions it has held since 1938 will indicate how it has used its powers, its development, and the range of its interests. The evolution of the committee system, and the blend of literates and illiterates on the various committees, is evidences of the way the Confederacy Council is adapting itself for its new functions. The numbers of literates on the permanent committees indicate the increasing influence that the literate members of the council are exercising on its deliberations.
