ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the characteristic features of ESP courses and programs developed within ideal, opportunistic, and ‘just-in-time’ educational settings, describing the strengths and weaknesses of each. Next, the chapter explains how these three different settings can greatly affect the responsibilities of ESP instructors and the work they need to do. Then, the chapter discusses the contentious issue of scope within ESP by addressing the question: should an ESP course and/or program be set up to address the very specific, ‘narrow-angled’ needs of individual learners, or should it be designed to address the more general, shared, ‘wide-angled’ needs of a broad range of learners?
